My Friend Songzhi is a beautifully crafted short film that explores memory, loneliness, and the fragile connections that exist between generations. Dreamlike and ethereal in tone, the film follows a young girl, Xia Ai, whose quiet fascination with an elderly woman she has never spoken to becomes a journey of discovery and reflection.

Xia Ai is struggling with feelings of isolation. Bullied by her peers and troubled by her parents' deteriorating relationship, she watches from afar as Songzhi, an elderly woman who survives by collecting rubbish, moves through life on the margins of society. When Songzhi dies, the girl becomes drawn to the abandoned flat she leaves behind.

Inside, Xia Ai discovers a world hidden beneath the clutter. Dust-covered possessions, a neglected piano with a broken key, old love letters discarded among the rubbish, and cherished shells decorating the room all reveal fragments of a life once filled with hope and romance. Through these discoveries, the film gently blurs the boundaries between past and present, allowing the audience to glimpse Songzhi's younger self and imagine the lost loves and dreams that shaped her life.

One of the film's most touching sequences centres on a cassette player and a collection of recordings containing classical music. As Xia Ai listens, she develops a profound connection with Songzhi, despite never having met her. Meanwhile, the contrast between the girl's own home life, marked by emotional neglect and her mother's dependence on alcohol, deepens the film's exploration of loneliness across generations.

As cleaners empty Songzhi's flat in preparation for new tenants, the erasure of a lifetime's memories feels both inevitable and heartbreaking. Xia Ai salvages several music sheets and, in the film's most poetic image, folds one into a paper boat and releases it onto a quiet river. The scene beautifully encapsulates the film's themes of remembrance, loss, and the passage of time.

Director and writers skilfully use visual symbolism throughout. The restored shell decorations suggest the delicate nature of life itself, while the empty riverside landscapes evoke both solitude and freedom. The film never resorts to sentimentality, instead allowing its themes to emerge naturally through observation and atmosphere.

At its heart, My Friend Songzhi is a meditation on the cycle of life, the importance of preserving memory, and the respect owed by the young to the old. It is a gentle yet emotionally resonant work that lingers long after its brief running time has ended.
