Director Statement
We Are Where We Are is about two people in transit, spending a night in a hotel. Emotionally, they're both sitting in that uncomfortable space just before a big decision.
I’m really drawn to those in-between moments. They can feel confusing and a bit disorienting, like you don’t fully belong anywhere, even in yourself, but they also open up these brief, unexpected connections. That’s where Aoife and Mark meet. Each of them is, in some way, holding something the other is searching for.
As a director, I’m always interested in telling stories that feel light and bright on the surface, but still carry emotional depth underneath. As soon as I read the story I knew I wanted to bring it to the screen, because it’s romantic, it’s human, it’s funny, and it’s also about moving on, and it felt real to me. Sometimes the screen can create a distance between the audience and the characters, building this idea of heroes who could never be us. But this story feels like the opposite of that. It feels like something that could actually happen. I recognise the pain Aoife’s going through, and I like that. I like the honesty of it, the reality within the fiction.
About the Director
Clara Planelles is originally from Uruguay but based in the west of Ireland since 2020. Her films have screened at prestigious festivals such as Galway Film Fleadh, Newport Beach, and the London Irish Film Festival and her last short, First Date, earned several awards.
Clara has also produced multiple shorts across Uruguay, Ecuador, Italy and Ireland, with international distribution. Her work consistently explores women as powerful, daring, and resilient.
